VALLEMAGGIA & VERZASCA

To escape the hustle & bustle of the city, we drove towards destination nature, Vallemaggia. It is one of the most beautiful nature reserves that winds its way through the Alps from Lake Maggiore. We decided to hike from Bignasco to Mondada. It is not the most challenging hike but the natural surroundings are beautiful. After a few hundred meters, parallel with the road, starts a hiking trail. A small rocky path covered in moss beneath the green canopy of oak and beech trees. The whole valley is a sparsely populated area, with approximately 9 people per square kilometre. Which …

ASCONA – LUGANO

Sometimes everything just works out fine. Ascension on a Thursday, Friday a bridge day and you have a nice long weekend just like that. And with a promising weather forecast we didn’t hesitate at all. Let’s drive to Lugano! You’re still in Switzerland but you’ll get a different experience. More on that later. We decided to take the shortest route possible, not only to save on battery juice, but to experience the Simplon pass. We crossed it around 8:30 in the morning. Perfect timing. The sky was mediterranean ocean blue and traffic fluid. Although it is already spring, there was still …

LES GORGES DU DAILLEY

An extraordinary walk in a setting that is wild yet easy walkable made possible by a group of enthusiastic volunteers. That’s exactly what we did a year after the route was re-opened for the public. It got partially destroyed in April 2021 by a 4 cubic rock rolling down. We climbed around 600 steps to conquer a 186m height difference with gorgeous views. The history of the path goes back to 1895. In the 1940-ies it got destroyed because of the construction of the Salanfe dam. In 1990 the AAGB (Association des Amis des Granges et du Biolley) saw the …

SARDINIA #3

In order to explore more of the island we decided not spent our whole stay at one location. Therefore we booked a couple of nights in a cosy B&B down South in Gergei. Little did we know that our ride would treat us to such stunning scenery. Driving through the Gennargentu National Park was just lovely, it sometimes reminded me of Switzerland. Especially the part between Lanusei and Lake Basso del Flumendosa with dozens of hairpin bends did. Arriving at Gergei, a small dormant village, it was quit easy to find our B&B Domu Antiga. We were warmly welcomed by …

SARDINIA #2

Remember that exited feeling when you jump out of bed, look outside and see everything covered under a white layer of snow? Well, i felt it again this morning but for the million happy rays of sunshine! We already decided yesterday, if the weather would improve, that we would drive to Palau, take a ferry to Isola Maddalena and cross the bridge to Isola di Caprera. It’s not a big island but you can have some lovely walks and it’s doped with lovely beaches. Combine both and that sounds like a plan. The easiest way to get to the beaches …

EL TEIDE

The highest mountain of Spain lies in the center of Teide National Park with rough volcanic landscapes. Remember that it’s still an active volcano, with its most recent eruption in 1909.It is difficult not to be impressed by the rough landscapes. In 2007 it got named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. And they were right to do so. Maybe you think: ‘what is so special about volcanic rock, it’s just some monotonous rough terrain, maybe a bit dull’ But then you’re wrong. After every turn, you want to stop for the next photo. There is an incredible amount of …

HIKING on Tenerife

If you like walking then Tenerife is the right place for you. Kilometers of hiking trails of varying difficulty and beautiful views. Just like in every mountain country you have to go prepared. The weather on the West Coast can be volatile. At dawn you will have sunshine and brilliant blue skies, and in the afternoon you will walk under a greyish cloud blanket. Which is actually a good thing, because the island does not have natural water sources. Nor rivers or lakes. All water precipitates by condensation, rain showers are rare, with the help of cloud forests. humidity is absorbed by …

TENERIFE

Island in the sun.And a popular one too. Every car rental company was completely sold out. The main reason was that numerous rental cars were sold during the pandemic to reduce cost. Luckily for us we made our reservation weeks upfront. Landed at Tenerife Airport South our next stop is Garachico for the next 7 days. Garachico is a charming quiet town located at the west coast trapped between a mountain and the Atlantic , far away from the crowded touristic South coast. Garachico got nearly completely destroyed in 1706 by an eruption of volcano Montaña Negra. Traces of lava …

CHETZERON & KANDERSTEG

May, a month were you expect birds to nest, rays of sunshine, lush alpine meadows but no snow fall. However this is exactly what we got during our long weekend. In retrospect it was not bad at all and sort of a special moment with heavenly blue skies and 50 shades of grey. Starting in Crans Montana we will hike to Chetzeron. Because of Corona we decided not to take the gondola nor the jeep offered by the hotel that would drive us. We did accept the offer of the driver to take our luggage. We said good-bye to the …

DERBORENCE #1

Squeezed in between les Diablerets, Haut de Cry and Mont Gond in canton of Valais (Suisse) you find the beautiful valley of Derborence. A protected nature reserve by Pro Natura. On a Sunday morning early March we wanted to hike around the lake of Derborence. Driving on the road from Conthey we were forced to leave the car on a small parking along the road. Driving to Derborance was not possible due to landslides and snow. So we decided to put on our hiking boots and walk the longer stretch.  Little did we know that we would not be able …
