Swinging bridge

News item on national television: “Opening of the 500m long suspension bridge in Switzerland.”
This immediately made me search the WWW to look for some additional info. In a blink of an eye i knew, we have to do this!
Checking my hiking boots i quickly realised i needed to do some shopping.
Got some new Meindels, walking sticks & compass. During the hike those sticks proofed to be very handy.
Booked dinner & 2 beds at Europa Hütte Randa because it will be a 2-day hike and we need a place to eat and get some sleep. All check boxes ticked we drove to Zermatt.

Grächen

Because we stayed in a hotel in Zermatt, we got up at 5AM to catch a train to Grächen. From there a short bus ride took us to our starting point.
A 14hr30 walk was indicated, in reality it took us more.
But we wouldn’t make it faster the next time, it’s too beautiful not to enjoy.
The hike itself is rated as a T3 walk following the Suisse Alpin club.
And that was no lie. We felt a little fatigue after 2 days climbing rocks.

The only way goes up

Mountains are the only stars we can reach by walking!

At some point we had to climb like goats to pass a ‘blokkenfeld’
Some time ago, there was a rock slide and there was no longer a normal trail. Just big boulders you had to climb over to get to the other side. It took us nearly 45mins to cross. Just to give you an idea about the difficulty and the size of the rock slide.

Start of a work-out
Our mental coaches

We arrived around 17hr at the Europa Hütte, exhausted but with a happy feeling. Since we were treated with excellent hiking weather and stunning clear views. We also felt proud we made it. Even with 2 XXL blisters on both heels. Turned out those new Meindels were not the best choice after all.

The next morning was a bit painful as the blisters had to be taken care of. After breakfast and some coffee we continued our hike and crossed the hanging bridge. Surprisingly the bridge doesn’t swing at all when you walk on it. The engineers created a system with dampers and counter weights so that every movement gets compensated for.

500 mtrs is quit a distance

The first thing we had, once returned to Zermatt, was a victory drink on the terras of Cervo. Followed by a warm shower and a some great food. The day after we planned a relax day but we finally ended up walking around Zermatt up to Sunnegga and Stellisee.
