DERBORENCE #1

Squeezed in between les Diablerets, Haut de Cry and Mont Gond in canton of Valais (Suisse) you find the beautiful valley of Derborence. A protected nature reserve by Pro Natura.
On a Sunday morning early March we wanted to hike around the lake of Derborence.
Driving on the road from Conthey we were forced to leave the car on a small parking along the road. Driving to Derborance was not possible due to landslides and snow. So we decided to put on our hiking boots and walk the longer stretch.

Road to Derborence

Little did we know that we would not be able to reach our destination.
Via a winding road and through hand-cut tunnels, with a couple of windows, we encountered the first boulders. The openings were there with a special purpose. When a farmer leads his flock of cows up and down to the Alpine meadows they take this road also. Because of the windows the cows are less stressed and enter the tunnel. Without them they would never enter a dark hole.
This and much more was told by a local we met during our walk.

Turns out he was a school bus driver at rest. For over 40 years he drove kids from school and back home. A couple a days later we got to know he was called ‘cacahouète’ or peanut. He was a warmhearted man with lots of stories to tell, which he shared with passion. Because of him, and his advice, we decided to return to our car and come back another time. Hopefully with better weather and less dangerous.
