Don’t expect anything to happen here.
Just wait. And let sink in the stunning environment.
Ask ‘what is this place?’, then open yourself completely to what you hear in the silence that follows. If you’re an escape artist, this is your secret hideaway.
Wolwedans did steal our hearts.
Why? That’s impossible to answer, it just did.
Like falling in love.

Spanning a 180,000ha non fenced terrain, Wolwedans is nested in the NamibRand Nature Reserve with plenty of space to enjoy the silence and nature. During one of our morning drives we noticed a solitary zebra walking in the dessert. With the soft light and a thin layer of mist this gave one of the most dazzling photo’s of our trip.
In retrospect, this turned out a rare sight because zebra’s are usually travelling as a herd.

Another rare phenomenon are the fairy circles. Round patches of only sand, where nothing is growing. As for today it is still a mystery why those circles exist, what their purpose is and why nothing is growing in them. They are numerous, stretching from north-western cape into Angola, and look a bit like little sink holes.

Something more about Wolwedans and the NamibRand reserve.
The idea of the reserve started in 1980’s by J.A. (Albi) Brückner.
Wolvedans saw the light in 1995 with only a couple of tents on a wooden deck. From the start they had in mind the philosophy of minimal impact.
We met Albi’s son Stephane Brückner who guided us around the facilities.
I must admit, the man has a vision.
They are self sustaining, grow their own vegetables, use solar panels, repair their tents, have a timber shop, they recycle as much as possible, run their own car repair shop where they keep those good old Defenders in excellent shape,….

And it doesn’t stop here.
The Wolwedans foundation invests in local education. Hospitality training, culinary classes and ranger training. All driven by the idea of giving back to the community which in return empowers Namibians.
Initiatives of which he can be deservedly proud!
Private initiatives for the public good to improve the quality of life is actually the definition of philanthropy.
As a side note, it is also a privilege, or a heavy inheritance, to manage such a beautiful domain.
And then you have reason to expect such initiatives.
