GENOVA LA SUPERBA

‘It’s an inspiring city’ was our response to a Genovesi asking how we liked it. “But a little dirty, right?” she added spontaneously. True. It could be cleaner. ‘You notice the difference immediately when you get to Belgium,’ she continued. Turns out she had already been to Antwerp and that creates a bond.
We baptise the city as ‘Genu’A’. Now it’s a little bit our city too!
A veil of mysticism hangs over the city. Probably because the houses are so close together so the sunlight cannot penetrate everywhere. Often the Caruggi, or alleys, are no wider than 1.80 meters. Fortunately, the crowds are not too bad, post Covid, and there are only few souls on the streets

The city has a lot of history. Once a powerful naval force in Europe it slowly transformed from a republic to a common harbour city at the Mediterranean sea. As for today, still the largest port of Italy. And not to forget, in 1451 Christoffel Columbus was born in Genua.
Best way to visit such a city? By public transport and by walking. So we parked our car on one of the parkings at the harbour area and walked to our hotel. We stayed at Le Nuvole next to the Palazzo Grillo where breakfast is served.

Because of its location, on a hillside, the city treats you with beautiful views. If you’re not in a great shape, don’t worry. On several locations you will find public elevators who will get you up hill in no time, like the ‘Ascensore Castelletto Levante’. You will get a nice overview of the city and get a feeling of it’s size.

Secret panoramic view point

Because of its ancient history and rich past, it is impossible to list all the you-must-have-seen. Palaces and churches are ubiquitous at Via Garibaldi and Via Baldo. So step inside somewhere and enjoy.
And of course, don’t forget to seek out the little squares and hidden corners where you can sit down & relax. And to enjoy some appetizers and a cocktail. They make great negroni!

At night the city changes into an intimate old lady. It’s heart beat slows down and people find themselves a table on a restaurant terras to enjoy a late diner. So did we. Pesto Genovese, fish, meat,….. all yummy.

Just outside Genua lies a charming little fishing port called Bocadesse. It has a small public beach next to a ‘gelateria’. Important when it’s hot and you’re longing for a refresher.
