ASCONA – LUGANO

Sometimes everything just works out fine. Ascension on a Thursday, Friday a bridge day and you have a nice long weekend just like that. And with a promising weather forecast we didn’t hesitate at all. Let’s drive to Lugano! You’re still in Switzerland but you’ll get a different experience. More on that later.
We decided to take the shortest route possible, not only to save on battery juice, but to experience the Simplon pass. We crossed it around 8:30 in the morning. Perfect timing. The sky was mediterranean ocean blue and traffic fluid. Although it is already spring, there was still a thick layer of snow.

Simplon

Instead of driving directly to Lugano we made a stop-over at Ascona. Situated at the shore of Lago Maggiore it is a real bijou. In retrospect a much cosier place than Lugano. While strolling along the water we soon got hungry and thirsty, but that’s where the numerous terraces come to the rescue. It was nice to slow down for a moment and enjoy a glass of chilled white wine and snacks in the spring sunshine.

Lake life

Fun fact for the Belgian readers. North-west of Ascona lies Monte Vertità, Mount Truth.
A well-known place by pacifists, socialists, artists, writers and founded in fall 1920 by a German pianist Ida Hofmann and a guy from Antwerp, Henri Oedenkove!

If you are a trained swimmer, you can swim across Lake Lugano from Switzerland to Italy. This is because 40% of the lake is located in Switzerland and 60% in Italy.
The lake is surrounded by hills such as Monte Bre and Monte San Salvatore.

Lugano compared to Ascona is larger and therefore less charming. And to our opinion a bit too crowdie. But if you’re a fan of Maserati, the Italian car with the tridente, then you have come to the right place. You will see them cruising in large numbers on the road next to the lake.
