SARDINIA #1

An island. Mediterranean sea. Belongs to Italy, so great food and nice weather.
The above bullet points were on our wish list, but only four out of five checkboxes ticked because…..
During the first 3 days of our holiday i couldn’t stop thinking about the Creedence Clearwater Revival song “Who’ll stop the rain”.
Luckily our hotel Petra Segreta had a wellness area and an outdoor swimming pool. Raindrops on your head while swimming feels a bit exotic and refreshing at the same time.

Not to worry about the bad weather we decided to explore the nearby city Olbia.
In all honesty, apart of 2 churches and an archeological museum, there’s not much to see. But it is a charming place.
Some facades of the small houses in the narrow streets were actually photogenic. While strolling around we walked by some street art and Piazza Mercato, a glass covered square. Just of Corso Umberto you’ll have Chiesa di San Paolo. Easy to spot due to the multicolor dome in a sawtooth pattern.

Chiesa di San Paolo

Our second day trip took us to Chiesa della Trinità di Saccargia (Basilica of the Holy Trinity of Saccargia), one of the most important churches in the comune of Codrongianos. Build in basalt and limestone you will notice it from afar. And we were not the only ones who spotted the church, given the numerous organised guided tourist bustours.

Crossing the island from east to west made us realise that it counts more chapels & churches than coffee bars.
Arriving at Sassari we looked for a terras and ordered both an Aperol Sprtitz. No coffee after 12 O’clock!
You can compare the atmosphere of Sassari with the one of Olbia. Narrow streets going up & down hill, the facades of the houses all have a somewhat weathered and old patina. And again plenty of chapels and churches.
