HAMBURG or GRUBMAH?

Grubmah you say?
Yes, because of the flip side of the city.
Hamburg has several layers. You have ‘Neuer Wall’ a shopping area (keep your wallet closed), office area, nice restaurants….
And you have a much more colourful and vivid area.

Like St. Pauli.
It’s a part of the city where you will find plenty of artists, little cosy shops, bars and lots of atmosphere. Me like very much!
And it is also known for the Reeperbahn. Being there in between 2 lock-downs not much was openend at night.
As we wandered through the streets we could hear, carried by the wind out of the past, fragments of drunken sailors singing and their laughter.

One of the shops in the Karo district had a special attraction to Karen.
A supercomfy hat shop named ‘Rotkäppchen‘ run by Ulla. Her moto: “Hat making is like pottery and sculpting with textiles”. The name ‘Rotkäppchen’ refers to little red riding hood. Another proof of Ulla’s creativity. Did i already mention she was a warmhearted host and has some really lovely pieces?
We left the shop not with only 1 hat, but 2 ;-)

With walls up to 3,5m, the Flaktürm IV was the most solid building on the must-see list. Build during WWII to defend the city from aircraft attacks, the above-ground blockhouse also served as a shelter for the citizens.
Little did we knew that last year NH Hotel Group decided to build a hotel on top of it. As you can see the construction works were already started.

Flaktürm

The amazing thing was that the music shop, Byte FM webradio and other businesses inside the Flaktürm were still open. Being inside the building you could only hear from far away the sound of drills and other construction activity. Not the slightest vibration was noticeable touching the massive walls. Thanks to a friendly Hamburger we could admire one of the escape towers inside the bunker. Must admit it was a special experience.
