BETHLEHEM

Only 20 mins driving and you’ll find yourself in a different world.
By coincidence we bumped into a simpatico taxi driver at the Lion’s gate. He was not only a good driver but also an entertaining tour guide. Later on we also discovered he was a friend of the former police commissioner of Bethlehem.
Israel does its best to discourage you to visit Palestine. They know very well tourism is a steady flow of currency and money is what Palestines are lacking of. And they like to keep it that way.

I’m not asking for a life without a battle. Peace is worth fighting for.

German engineering is superb but the Israeli do better. At least in building concrete walls to keep the unwanted outside. No hosannas from the other side.
It’s hallucinatory to stand beside it. Even the beautiful graffiti can’t change that. It’s is a monumental middle finger, which leaves little or no opening for negotiating a peaceful future. Can the killer in me tame the fire in you?
Silent protest. Un jihad de l’amour.

In Beit Lechem centre it was obvious that our taxi driver/guide/historian was well known around. He introduced us to a local guide to visit the Church of The Nativity. Although the visitors were numerous it went very smooth. At every waiting point he greeted the security agent and gates opened without having to que. It felt like having a royal tour. It was only after our visit we got to know that our guide was actually the former police commissioner. That explains why we got our free passings and he was treated with so much respect by the security agents.
