Aitoo

A golden heart, a golden bird, a lovely host. That’s Aitoo’s Home.
We arrived late afternoon unannounced. The welcome was warm and immediately we were invited for a cup of tea & cake. Together with his spouse Gulnaz and mother we enjoyed the warmth of their presence and kitchen. They live rather secluded and are therefore self-sustaining for most part of their daily life.
We spent the night in one of their yurts, covered under colourful blankets.

In Kyrgyz an eagle is called Berkut, named after the golden feathers in his neck. The hunters are the Berkutchi.
Eagle hunting is probably one of biggest Kyrgyz traditions. Aitoo’s eagles are well trained. The moment they were taken out of the nest, which is not without danger, training commenced. It takes 3 -4 years before the eagle ready for hunt.

The way Aitoo handles the eagles showed great respect for this beautiful animal. Their bond is strong. He’s the only allowed to feed the eagle. This is done specifically to improve the relationship. Female eagles are preferred over male species because they make better hunters. Together with Aitoo’s dog this winged lady will even hunt for jackal or wolfs!

Our great hosts, Gulnaz & Aitoo
