PEACE & QUIET

Since we were in Spain anyway, we decided to stay a little longer and turn it into a holiday. When we left Zaragoza we agreed to drive direction Balearic sea with no given destination. We stopped at Alcañiz, an old sleepy town located on a steep hill, bordering the Guadalope river, surrounded by mountains and olive groves. You can see The castle of the Order of Calatrava from far away.

In reality there was not much to see at Alcañiz.
After a light lunch on the terrace of a tiny tapas bar, we drove on to our destination of peace and tranquillity. The night before, Karen had found a nice place to stay. Consolación near Monroyo.
Upon arrival, it turned out to be an incredible place. We had a cube in the middle of nature all to ourselves with a great terrace overlooking the surroundings. And a huge bath sunk into the floor!

Breakfast was great and diner, served in the shed, was simply spectacular.
We enjoyed it that much that we decided to stay 2 more nights.
Which gave us the opportunity to explore the Matarraña region a bit more.
A 25-minute drive away is Morella, an old walled town on a hill-top listed as one of the most beautiful towns in Spain.
We can confirm this, it is quite a pleasant place.

One of the highlights is the Arciprestal Basilica of Santa Maria de Morella.
From the outside it doesn’t look that interesting at all, but once you enter the Door of the Aspostles it is breathtaking.
The Altar is phenomenal. It incorporates various paintings: The Last Supper and The Trinity, by Espinosa; The Assumption by Juan Francisco Cruella; The Nativity of Jesus and The Adoration of the Magi, by Pablo Pontons.
Packed with multiple decorations and sculptural elements. You really have to sit down to observe it calmly in its entirety.
