We are no strangers to northern and central Italy. But we had never visited the far south, or ‘the heel’. It was about time to change that.
We landed in Brindisi, which couldn’t have been more convenient, picked up our hire car and visited the city. Our first stop was a local delicatessen shop to eat ‘ a made in Puglia’ sandwich with Martina Franca ham & burrata cheese. Delicious, it was!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brindisi is a small provincial town on the Adriatic Sea and actually quite charming. But we didn’t stay there long. The lure of Gallipoli was too strong.
Besides, we had already decided on a few places we definitely wanted to see: Lecce, Otranto, Santa Maria di Leuca, Taranto, Matera, Martina Franca, Locorotondo, Monopoli and Ostuni\u2026. on 10 days.
The oldest part of Gallipoli is actually a peninsula connected to the mainland by a bridge and the Angevine-Aragonese Castle.
Walking along the Ionian coast, I was reminded of the sailing trip we had made here a few months earlier. The old town is pleasant to walk around and not very big at all. You can actually walk around it in just over an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first nights we spend at Tenuta Montecelli<\/a> located on a hilltop in the countryside near Alezio. We were treated to a beautiful view over the bay of Gallipoli.
Their garden was beautiful and well maintained.
Two years ago, it was still a beautiful olive grove, but due to the Xyllela bacterium that attacks and destroys olive trees, they were forced to burn all their trees. They have now planted young olive trees (a resistant variety) and fig trees. But it will be at least 20 years before they can produce olive oil again. A real tragedy.
Meanwhile, more than a million olive trees have died throughout the region and 21 million others have been infected out of a total of 60 million. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
