Corfu or Kerkyra in Greek, the capital city of Corfu has quit a history.
During the fifth century BCE it was one of the largest naval powers in the area. They were ruled by the Republic of Venice, repeatedly managed to thwart attacks by the Ottoman Empire, were under French rule for two years and then fell into the hands of the British Empire, eventually becoming part of Greece. During the Second World War, the island was occupied by Italy and, at the end of the war, heavily bombed by the Germans, resulting in the destruction of many historic buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the city has since been rebuilt and is now facing renovation.
This is clearly visible when you venture away from the tourist streets. The squares and streets behind them have a beautiful lived-in patina.
If you’re a music fan, visit the Old Fortress. It houses the music department of the Ionian University. If you walk past it in the evening and sit down on a bench, you can enjoy jazz music that fills the evening air from the open windows. In general, it is a pleasant city, but we did not stay long because we preferred some peace and quiet to the hustle and bustle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
